United Way Kolkata
Going beyond temporary fixes to create lasting change that lifts up the entire community.
Advance common good through the three building blocks for good quality of life:
- Education – help children and youth to achieve their full potential.
- Livelihood – provide financial stability and independence for families and individuals.
- Health – provide opportunities to improve people’s health.
In 1887, a Denver woman, a priest, two ministers and a rabbi got together... It sounds like the beginning of a bad joke, but they didn't walk into a bar; what they did do was recognize the need to work together in new ways to make Denver a better place.
Frances Wisebart Jacobs, the Rev. Myron W. Reed, Msgr. William J.O’Ryan, Dean H. Martyn Hart and Rabbi William S. Friedman put together an idea that became the nation's first united campaign, benefitting 10 area health and welfare agencies. They created an organization to collect the funds for local charities, to coordinate relief services, to counsel and refer clients to cooperating agencies, and to make emergency assistance grants for cases that could not be referred. That year, Denver raised $21,700 for this greater good, and created a movement that would become United Way.
What is United Way
United Way is an international social change movement to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities. It has a global network United Way Worldwide with over 4000 non-profit organizations and more than 1400 United Ways in 43 countries that work to advance the common good of communities focused on education, income and health. These are the building blocks for a good life: a quality education that leads to a stable job, enough income to support a family through retirement, and good health.
United Way is a one-stop agency that supports a broad range of programs committed to supporting causes that matter to its partners, their employees and the communities they live in. Each is locally registered and governed by a volunteer local board comprising senior business leaders - global and local, entrepreneurs, academicians and individual leaders who give the organization an edge with their experience, knowledge and management and technological expertise. The chapters provide a platform for companies and others to play an active role in the communities within which they live and operate. United Way came to India 27 years ago and the network is 7-chapter strong – Baroda, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad and Kolkata, the youngest. Each United Way is registered locally, governed by eminent local citizens to work locally on issues pertinent to local communities.
